22. HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR INTERNATIONAL MOVER

In International moves, the following parties "Links" are involved:

Pick up team: - Usually a local mover who will come to your home, do the packing and the loading into a truck for an LCL (less than container load), or into a container for an FCL (full container load).

Consolidation agent: - if your shipment is an LCL, your HHG (household goods) will be brought to the Consolidation agent's warehouse for consolidation with other shipments

Trucker: If your shipment is an FCL, the services of a trucker will be required. This is a company who will pick up the container from the container yard and transport it to the loading location and then back to the port

US Customs authorized specialist - An individual or a company who will prepare and submit your shipping documentation at the port of exit

Steam Ship Line - The company who owns the ship on which the container holding your HHG will be loaded.

Overseas Customs Agent - The company or individual who will release your HHG from Customs at the port of entry

Destination agent - Overseas agent who will receive and distribute the various shipments consolidated in the container

Overseas trucking company - usually hired by the destination agent. This is the moving company who will deliver your shipment from the Destination agent's warehouse to your new home. If your shipment is and FCL, then this is
the trucker who will deliver the container to your new home.

Overseas delivery team - Usually a local mover in your new town, who will deliver your HHG into your new home. In case of an FCL, this is the team who will unload the container, position the HHG in your new home and remove the packing debris.

The success of your International move depends on the performance of each and all the above Links. If one of the links fail, your International move will be less successful. A successful International move requires excellent administration and control. Experience, integrity and professional pride are also essential.

No company in the world owns all the "Hardware" and Links described above. The administration skill of the company you hire, not if they own a truck to pick up your HHG, will make the move successful. You need a company that will administrate and manage your move from pick up to delivery.

The company you choose MUST be licensed and regulated by the *Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) and have an Ocean Transportation Intermediary (OTI) license. If you choose a company that is not licensed by the FMC to execute your International move, you are using a company that operates illegally, is not regulated, and you will have no recourse if
things go wrong.

CARGO ONE is licensed by the FMC with the OTI License # 9799N

Surveys and estimates:

Cost to overseas destinations is based on weight and (cubic) measurement of the household goods when packed for shipment. It includes air or ocean transportation charges and packing and unpacking services of the carrier's origin and destination agents. Most shipments will be shipped in 20' or 40' containers. It does NOT include charges for storage,
servicing of appliances, custom duty, liability coverage or extra pick up or deliver. International rates are not regulated and can be very competitive. We offer free estimates.

What not to move:

Many articles of household goods cannot be shipped internationally and your mover should supply you with this list (plants, foods, flammables). You should also be informed, if known, of custom regulations to identify any boycotted manufactures or materials which are prohibited in the destination country, such as liquor, fire arms or ammunition. You can contact the nearest consular of the destination country and obtain a copy of the latest customs regulations.

Custom duty for importation of automobiles varies from country to country and is sometimes extremely high.

Pets are forbidden in some countries and others may require an entry permit, health and rabies certificates or a quarantine period up to six months or longer at the owners expense.

Packing:

Packing for an overseas move is very different from that of a move within the United States. Everything must be wrapped and arranged inside large waterproof plywood, metal or fiberglass boxes called lift vans or loaded directly into ship containers (20 ft and 40 ft). You should NOT pack your own goods. Due to recent terrorist threats, self-packing is not allowed. The Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002 dictates what can and cannot be done on international moves. Professional movers use specially designed cartons that are heavy enough for fragile items. All items not boxed are and should be wrapped in a thick corrugated brown paper. Everything is then fitted into the container. Most movers will pack and load the containers at residence.

Required documents:

Completion of several documents should be completed to avoid complications at destination. Applications for these forms should be made as far as in advance as possible.

Passports, Certificate of Registration, US Export Forms, Visa, Residence and Work Permits, Medical and Immunization Certificates, International Driving Permits, and Marriage Certificate

In order to complete the export documentation, we will need the exact information of the shipper, such as name, U.S address, phone number and social security number. A legible copy of the passport is required. Furthermore, we need the address at destination where the shipper can be reached. We will also need a detailed inventory in English and in the language of the country of destination.

Services offered:

The door to door service includes the pick up of the shipment from the door of your originating address, transporting it to your destination country, clearing it through Customs and delivering the shipment to the door of your destination address. Inside pick ups and inside delivery are available as well.

The door to depot service includes the pick up of your shipment from the door of your originating address and transporting it to a depot in the vicinity of the airport or port at your country of destination.CARGO ONE's involvement will end at this point. It is your responsibility to clear the shipment through Customs and to arrange for the collection.

Transportation insurance:

There are two different kinds of coverage : against all risks and against total loss. You can only get coverage against all risks if your belongings have been packaged by a professional moving company. A itemized valued inventory is required. Personal effects packaged by the shipper himself can only be insured against total loss. Premiums and exclusions are available upon request.
